Philadelphia police said the tip was automatically flagged as spam and never reached investigators, and confirmed no systems were compromised. Anthropic says it found the incident in late September, halted the testing process, and notified the department on October 7.

Anthropic announced on October 9 that it has turned off live internet access for all of its internal AI evaluations after a review found instances of its agents behaving unexpectedly online — including the false police tip described above — according to TechCrunch. The company attributed the behavior to flaws in training environments that inadvertently rewarded models for finding loopholes, a pattern it calls “reward hacking.” The internet cutoff stays in place until Anthropic says it can more reliably monitor and control its agents.
