How to Stop Gmail From Auto-Sorting Your Inbox Into Tabs

Exploring how creativity, culture, and technology connect us.

If you have ever missed a receipt, a school notice or a reply from a client because Gmail quietly filed it under Promotions or Updates, you already know the problem. Gmail’s category tabs decide where mail goes before you see it, and the algorithm does not always get it right.

This guide shows you how to turn the tabs off on desktop and in the mobile app. It also covers how to keep only the tabs you actually like, and what to do if you want to keep using tabs but stop important senders from being misfiled.

Quick Answer

On desktop, click the gear icon, choose See all settings, open the Inbox tab, uncheck every category except Primary (or switch Inbox type away from Default), and click Save Changes. Your Social, Promotions, Updates and Forums mail then shows up in one regular inbox list.

How to Turn Off Gmail Tabs on Desktop

Step 1: Open Gmail in a web browser and click the gear icon at the top right. Step 2: Click See all settings. Step 3: Open the Inbox tab. Step 4: In the Categories section, uncheck Social, Promotions, Updates and Forums, leaving only Primary checked. Step 5: Scroll to the bottom and click Save Changes.

Google’s own help page describes a slightly different route: in the Quick settings panel, the Inbox type section lets you pick Default (which uses categories, with a Customize option to choose which tabs appear) or a different layout, which turns the categories off. Either method gets you to a single-list inbox. Menu wording changes from time to time, so if a label looks different, look for the Inbox type or Categories controls.

Once saved, the tab bar disappears and new mail from all senders appears together in chronological order. Mail that was already sorted into a tab may still carry its category label, but it will show in your main inbox view rather than being hidden in a separate tab.

How to Turn Off Tabs in the Gmail App

On Android, open the Gmail app, tap the Menu icon at the top left, tap Settings, and choose your account. Tap Inbox type and select Default Inbox, then tap Inbox categories and uncheck the categories you do not want to see. The app follows the same account-level setting as the web version, so changes usually carry across your devices.

On iPhone and iPad the menu path is similar (Menu, Settings, then your account), but the labels can differ by app version. If you cannot find the option in the app, make the change once in a desktop browser and it will apply to your account everywhere.

Keep Some Tabs, Rescue the Important Mail

You do not have to go all-or-nothing. If you like having a separate Promotions tab but keep losing important messages, leave that tab on and turn off the others. Or keep all the tabs and move a misfiled message by dragging it onto the Primary tab. Gmail will then ask whether you want future messages from that sender to go to Primary as well; say yes.

For a more reliable option, create a filter: search for the sender, choose Create filter, and pick options such as Never send to Spam or Categorize as. Filters are rules you control, so they are more predictable than Gmail’s automatic sorting.

Tips / Common Mistakes

Do not confuse tabs with spam. Turning off tabs will not block junk; it only changes how your regular mail is displayed. Unwanted marketing mail will now sit in your main inbox, so plan a few minutes to unsubscribe from senders you no longer read or create a filter that labels and archives them.

If the tabs seem to come back, check that you saved your changes and that you are editing the same Google account you are viewing. Also remember that changes made in a work or school Google Workspace account may be restricted by an administrator.

Finally, consider using labels and stars to replace the organization the tabs gave you. A label for receipts, one for newsletters and a starred-message habit for urgent items give you control that automatic categories never will.

Gmail inbox tabs FAQs

Will turning off Gmail tabs delete my emails?

No. Turning off tabs only changes how mail is displayed. Every message stays in your account and simply appears in your main inbox view instead of a separate tab.

Can I keep just the Promotions tab?

Yes. In Settings, go to the Inbox tab, and check only the categories you want alongside Primary. Uncheck the rest and click Save Changes.

Why do I still see tabs on my phone after turning them off on my computer?

The setting is tied to your Google account, so it should sync, but the app may need a refresh or restart. If tabs still appear, open Settings in the Gmail app, choose your account, and check the Inbox type and Inbox categories options.

How do I get the tabs back?

Go back to Settings, open the Inbox tab, choose the Default inbox type, and check the categories you want. Click Save Changes and the tab bar will reappear.
