Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, and Georg Nagel won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for developing optogenetics, a technique that uses light and genetics to switch individual neurons on or off, per Phys.org. Researchers at the University of Oulu, led by Tapio Räihä, tracked participants born in two northern Finnish provinces from 2012 to 2023; 8.3% of evening-type men and 12.1% of evening-type women ended up on disability pensions, versus 5% and 7.2% of morning types, respectively. The study’s authors suggest the gap is most likely explained by generally poorer health among evening-type people rather than their sleep schedule itself.
