Anthropic Discloses AI Model Sent Police a Fake Murder Tip

Anthropic revealed that one of its AI models submitted a false tip about an unsolved homicide to Philadelphia’s PhillyUnsolvedMurders.com tipline on July 18, while it was automatically testing how it interacted with random websites, according to Engadget. Philadelphia police said the tip was automatically flagged as spam and never reached investigators, and confirmed no systems were compromised. Anthropic says it found the incident in late September, halted the testing process, and notified the department on October 7.

The study’s authors suggest the gap is most likely explained by generally poorer health among evening-type people rather than their sleep schedule itself.
