Tech news today is led by Uber expanding OpenAI’s ChatGPT Work to its entire 30,000-person global workforce, up from an earlier 1,000-person pilot, and by Meta turning chat-sharing back on for its Muse AI assistant after a privacy scare over publicly indexed shared links.

Also in today’s tech news: Apple added an AI assistant to Pages, Keynote and Numbers, a verified trailer for BioWare’s canceled Mass Effect: Universe leaked online, Switch 2 got its first software-only jailbreak, Apple’s foldable iPhone Duo launches today, and Bluesky added beta iPad support and profile links to outside platforms. In science and space, NASA briefs reporters today on its moon plans, Typhoon Champi has shut down schools and offices across Taiwan, a new study ties over 50,000 European heat deaths this summer to climate change, and researchers found mole rats show a stress response when Earth’s magnetic field is removed. If you want to put ChatGPT to work at home, see our guide on using ChatGPT to turn leftovers into dinner, and if your phone keeps nudging you toward AI-generated looks, here’s how to stop Android from suggesting AI wallpapers and icons.

The TLDR

Tech & Apps: Meta Turns Muse Chat Sharing Back On After Privacy Scare

AI Tools: Uber Puts All 30,000 Employees on ChatGPT Work

Science & Space: NASA Holds Live Briefing Today on Artemis Moon Plans

Tech & Apps

Meta Turns Muse Chat Sharing Back On After Privacy Scare

Meta has restarted the sharing feature on Muse, its AI chat assistant, after suspending it on October 20 when security firm Claroc found thousands of shared conversation links were being indexed publicly. Claroc said it located more than 6,800 Muse share links through public DNS records, including chats containing a small business’s loan application and other sensitive details. The Verge reports sharing is now back on.

Apple Adds an AI ‘Intelligent Assistant’ to Pages, Keynote and Numbers

Apple has rolled out a beta Intelligent Assistant across Pages, Keynote and Numbers for Apple Creator Studio subscribers running iOS 27 or later. In Pages it can draft and edit text, in Keynote it can build slides and presenter notes, and in Numbers it can suggest charts and build formulas from plain-language requests, according to 9to5Mac (also reported by MacRumors).

Leaked Mass Effect: Universe Trailer Surfaces After BioWare’s Closure

A roughly two-minute trailer for a canceled project called Mass Effect: Universe leaked onto Reddit on October 22, a day after EA announced it was shutting down BioWare. The footage brings back series character Liara T’Soni and was verified as authentic by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier and IGN, per Ars Technica. The game was still in pre-production when the studio closed, so it will not be released.

Switch 2 Gets Its First Software-Only Jailbreak

In other tech news, a security researcher published a tethered, software-only exploit called ns2jb that gives homebrew access on Nintendo Switch 2 units running firmware 23.0.1, with no modchip required. The exploit enters through SmileBASIC, a programming app also available on the original Switch, taking advantage of an integer overflow in its interpreter to gain memory read-and-write access, according to Ars Technica. It enables homebrew software and save backups but doesn’t unlock full system access or custom firmware.

First iPhone Duo Units Begin Shipping Ahead of Today’s Launch

Apple’s foldable iPhone Duo officially goes on sale today, October 23, and some early pre-orders marked for launch-day delivery are already showing as “shipped” in the Apple Store app. 9to5Mac (also reported by MacRumors) notes orders move through processing, preparing-to-ship, shipped and delivered stages in the app’s order tracker.

Bluesky Adds Beta iPad Support and Profile Links

In more tech news, Bluesky has launched beta testing for a proper iPad version of its app, with a toggle in Settings for users to report issues. The update also lets people add links to outside platforms — such as Patreon or Ko-fi — directly on their profile through a new Links section in Edit Profile, per Engadget.

AI Tools

Uber Puts All 30,000 Employees on ChatGPT Work

Uber has expanded access to OpenAI’s enterprise agent ChatGPT Work to its entire global workforce of 30,000 employees, up from an initial pilot of 1,000 earlier this year. TechCrunch reports that in the pilot, 80% of users were non-engineers who used the tool for tasks like analyzing operations data and building dashboards. The company hasn’t disclosed how much it’s spending on the rollout.

<button

Science & Space

NASA Holds Live Briefing Today on Artemis Moon Plans

NASA is giving a press briefing today, October 23, at 2 p.m. ET from Kennedy Space Center on its plans to land astronauts on the moon, with participants including NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman. Space.com says the update covers progress toward returning astronauts to the lunar surface by 2028, streamed live on NASA’s website.

Typhoon Champi Shuts Down Schools and Offices Across Taiwan

Schools, shops and the stock exchange across most of Taiwan closed today as Typhoon Champi approached with sustained winds of about 167 km/h (104 mph), after earlier peaking at super-typhoon strength. More than 1,200 people were evacuated, and forecasters warned of up to 90 centimeters of rain over three days, according to Phys.org. At least one person has died after being swept away by typhoon-driven waves.

Study: Europe’s 2026 Summer Heat Killed Over 50,000 People

A study published today in Nature Health estimates that warmer temperatures caused 50,391 deaths across 854 European cities this past June, July and August, with researchers attributing roughly 65% of those deaths to human-caused climate change. Phys.org reports the Imperial College London-led team, headed by climate scientist Clair Barnes, says the true toll is likely higher since the count excludes a May heat wave and covers only about 40% of Europe’s population.

Mole Rats Show Stress Response When Earth’s Magnetic Field Is Removed

Researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Neurobiology of Behavior found that Ansell’s mole rats actively avoid areas with a near-zero magnetic field and show activity in stress-related brain regions like the amygdala when exposed to one. The team built a 3D brain-imaging atlas of the mole rats to track the response, according to ScienceAlert. The findings are posted as a bioRxiv preprint and haven’t yet been peer-reviewed.

Tech News FAQs

Is Meta Muse’s sharing feature safe to use again?

Meta turned chat sharing back on after addressing the issue that let shared Muse conversation links be found through public DNS records. Security firm Claroc, which first flagged the exposure, rechecked old links afterward and found they no longer opened.

When does the iPhone Duo go on sale?

The iPhone Duo launches today, October 23, 2026. Some early pre-orders with launch-day delivery are already marked “shipped” in the Apple Store app.

Is the Mass Effect: Universe game coming out?

No. The leaked trailer shows a project called Mass Effect: Universe that was still in pre-production when EA announced BioWare’s closure, so the game will not be released.

Staring into a fridge full of odds and ends with no idea what to cook is one of the most common kitchen frustrations, and it’s also one of the easiest problems to hand off to AI. ChatGPT is good at exactly this kind of constraint-based thinking: give it a messy list of ingredients and it will suggest combinations a tired brain might miss.

This guide walks through two ways to do it, typing a list or uploading a photo, plus the specific prompt wording that gets you a usable recipe instead of a vague suggestion, and a few tweaks to make the results actually match what’s in your kitchen.

Quick Answer

Open ChatGPT, list everything you have (or snap a photo of your fridge/pantry), and ask it to suggest a recipe using only those ingredients plus common pantry staples. Tell it your time limit, any dietary needs, and how many people you’re feeding, then ask for a simple step-by-step recipe.

Typing a List vs. Uploading a Photo

The fastest method is just typing. Open a new chat and list what you’ve got, including small or half-used items: ‘leftover rotisserie chicken, half a bag of spinach, three eggs, a wedge of parmesan, half an onion, rice from last night, soy sauce.’ The more specific you are, the more usable the suggestions, so include quantities roughly (‘a cup of rice’ beats just ‘rice’).

You can also upload a photo instead of typing. On the ChatGPT mobile app, tap the + button to the left of the message box and choose a photo from your camera roll or camera; on the web and desktop apps, click the + button next to the input field and choose ‘Add photos & files’ to upload an image from your device. Ask it to identify what it sees and suggest a dinner using those ingredients. This works well but isn’t perfect, it can miss items at the back of a shelf or misread something in a container, so it helps to crop the photo to the items you actually want considered and double-check the ingredient list it comes back with before cooking.

Either way, give ChatGPT the constraints that matter: how much time you have, how many people you’re cooking for, any allergies or diets, and what equipment you’re using (stovetop, oven, air fryer, instant pot). A prompt like ‘Give me a 20-minute one-pan dinner for two using these, nothing else needed except basic pantry staples like oil, salt, and garlic’ produces far more useful output than just ‘what can I make with this.’

Getting a Recipe You’ll Actually Cook

Once ChatGPT suggests a dish, ask it to write out the full recipe: ingredient list with rough amounts, numbered steps, and an estimated cook time. If the first idea doesn’t appeal to you, just say so, ‘not that, something more like a soup’ or ‘I don’t have an oven’ works fine, and it will adjust without starting the conversation over.

If you’re not sure an ingredient combination will actually taste good together, ask directly: ‘does soy sauce work with the parmesan and chicken, or should I leave one out?’ ChatGPT can flag flavor clashes or suggest swapping an item for something more complementary.

For food safety, ChatGPT can give general guidance (like how long cooked chicken is typically safe in the fridge) but it isn’t a substitute for your own judgment or official food-safety resources when something looks, smells, or feels off. When in doubt, toss it rather than cook it.

Tips and Common Mistakes

Be specific about quantities when you can, ‘half a bag of spinach’ leads to a better-portioned recipe than just ‘spinach.’ Mention what you’re willing to buy, if anything, so ChatGPT doesn’t build a recipe around an ingredient you don’t actually have, or conversely, feel free to say ‘I can grab one or two things from the store’ if your leftovers alone won’t make a full meal.

Don’t skip telling it your skill level and time budget; a suggestion that sounds great can turn out to need an hour of active cooking, which defeats the point of a quick leftovers meal. If a recipe still feels off once you start cooking, taste as you go and adjust seasoning yourself, ChatGPT is good at structure and ideas but it isn’t tasting your actual food.

Keep a running ‘leftovers’ chat if you do this often, ChatGPT can remember context within that conversation, so you can just add new items as your fridge changes (‘also now have half a can of coconut milk’) instead of retyping everything each time.

ChatGPT for leftovers FAQs

Can ChatGPT really tell what’s in my fridge from a photo?

Yes, you can upload a photo and ask it to identify ingredients and suggest a recipe, but it can miss items that are tucked away or hard to see, so it’s worth confirming the list it gives you before cooking from it.

Do I need a paid ChatGPT plan to do this?

No, the free version of ChatGPT can analyze uploaded photos and chat with you about recipes. A paid plan isn’t necessary for this use case.

What if ChatGPT suggests a recipe that needs an ingredient I don’t have?

Tell it which ingredient you’re missing and ask for a substitute or a version of the recipe without it. You can also start by saying you only want recipes using what you already listed, no extra grocery trips.

Tech & Apps

Gemini’s Personal Intelligence Comes to Android Auto

Google has begun rolling out Personal Intelligence, a more personalized version of its Gemini assistant, to Android Auto and vehicles with Google built-in, according to The Verge. The feature lets Gemini pull context from your Gmail, Calendar, Maps, Photos, YouTube, and Search while you drive, so you can ask things like your flight status without digging through separate apps. Engadget reports the feature will expand to more cars with Google built-in over the coming months.

JustWatch Launches Its Own Streaming Service

JustWatch, the app best known for telling you which service is streaming a given movie or show, has launched its own streaming platform called JustWatch TV, according to Ars Technica. The new service combines free ad-supported streaming, paid rentals, and an ad-free subscription tier, rolling out across 12 countries including the US. If you’re weighing your own streaming costs, see our breakdown of streaming bundles versus cable.

OpenBSD 8.0 Ships With New Graphics and Virtualization Support

OpenBSD, a security-focused alternative operating system popular with system administrators, released version 8.0, adding Intel Arc graphics support, ARM64 hibernation, and support for larger 64-vCPU virtual machine guests, according to Ars Technica. It’s a niche release for most readers, but it’s closely watched for the project’s unusually strong security track record.

iOS 27 Adds a Scam-Detection Feature You Have to Turn On Yourself

iOS 27 includes a feature called Impersonation Risk Detection, designed to flag when someone might be impersonating a bank, government agency, or trusted contact to scam you, according to 9to5Mac. It analyzes device and Apple Account activity and shares only a risk level, not the underlying data, with supporting apps. The feature is off by default, so you’ll need to turn it on under Settings > Privacy & Security.

iOS 27.2 Brings Small Upgrades to Six Apple Apps

Apple’s next iPhone update, iOS 27.2, adds new features across six built-in apps, according to 9to5Mac. Highlights include Messages suggesting calendar events or reminders from your conversations, Apple TV adding profile selection for shared accounts, and FaceTime’s Dual Capture mode expanding to group calls. The update is expected to arrive next week.

AI Tools

ChatGPT Now Lets You Lock Sensitive Chats With a PIN

OpenAI rolled out a Locked Chats feature that lets you protect individual ChatGPT conversations with a PIN, Face ID, or Touch ID, according to TechCrunch. Locked conversations move to a separate section, so you can hand your phone to someone else without worrying they’ll stumble onto a private chat, though OpenAI notes it isn’t full encryption and doesn’t change data retention. The feature is rolling out across ChatGPT’s Free, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans.

Meta’s Muse AI Companion Hits 10 Million US Downloads

Meta’s AI companion app Muse reached 10 million US downloads within 40 days of its September 2026 launch, a pace only 11 other apps have ever matched, according to TechCrunch. It’s also retaining users better than rival AI apps, with 30% of users still active after 7 days compared to roughly 19% for competitors.
SpaceX Plans to Try Catching Both Starship Stages on the Next Test Flight

Elon Musk says SpaceX will attempt to catch both the booster and the upper stage of its Starship rocket during the same test flight for the first time, with the next launch expected in November, according to Space.com.
A study published in the journal SLEEP found that an AI model analyzing a single ECG lead during sleep could predict future heart failure, stroke, and atrial fibrillation risk years in advance, according to ScienceAlert. The model, trained on nearly 16,000 patients and validated on roughly 23,000 more, found that heart rate and electrical patterns during the lightest stage of sleep were especially predictive, improving heart failure risk prediction by up to 9% beyond standard risk factors.

The American Ornithological Society’s latest taxonomic supplement split the Russet-crowned Motmot into two species, newly recognizing the Guatemalan Motmot (Momotus castaneiceps) as a species found only in Guatemala’s Río Motagua valley, according to Phys.org. The split, based on differences in plumage, calls, and genetics, gives Guatemala its first bird species found nowhere else in the world.

A capsule wardrobe is a small, curated set of clothes that all mix and match into far more outfits than the item count suggests — the point isn’t owning fewer things, it’s owning things that work together. The hard part has always been the inventory: standing in front of a closet and actually seeing what you have, not just what you reach for out of habit.

ChatGPT can do that inventory work for you. Because it can read uploaded photos, you can show it your closet piece by piece and have it build a catalog, flag what’s redundant, and generate outfit combinations you’d never have thought to pair yourself. Here’s a practical workflow for doing it without buying a single new item.

Quick Answer

Photograph each item in your closet, upload the photos to ChatGPT in batches, and ask it to catalog everything by category, color, and season. Then ask it to generate outfit combinations from that catalog and point out gaps or redundancies — all using only what you already own.

Step 1: Build Your Inventory in ChatGPT

Start a ChatGPT Project (free on every plan) dedicated to your wardrobe — Projects keep files and instructions attached to one workspace so ChatGPT doesn’t lose context between sessions, which matters here because you’ll be coming back to this over days or weeks, not one sitting. Set a custom instruction at the top of the project describing your climate, lifestyle, and any colors or styles you gravitate toward.

Photograph your clothes in decent light — flat on a bed or hung against a plain wall works better than a messy pile, since ChatGPT’s image recognition is more reliable with one item clearly visible at a time. Upload them in small batches over several days and ask ChatGPT to log each piece: category, color, fabric weight if you know it, and season. This batching isn’t just good practice — free accounts are capped at a handful of uploads per day and a small number of files per Project, so spreading a big closet across multiple days avoids hitting that ceiling mid-catalog. Ask ChatGPT to keep a running list in the chat so you can paste it back in later if a conversation resets.

Be honest about what you actually have — don’t ask ChatGPT to imagine items you don’t own just to round out the catalog. The entire value of this exercise is working from your real closet, not a fantasy one.

Step 2: Generate Outfits and Find the Gaps

Once your catalog is built, ask ChatGPT to generate complete outfits using only the cataloged items, grouped by occasion (work, weekend, travel, dressy). This is where it earns its keep — it’s good at spotting unlikely but workable combinations across pieces you’d never have paired by instinct, since it isn’t anchored to your habitual outfit patterns.

Next, ask it to identify two things: items that don’t pair with anything else in the catalog (candidates to donate or retire) and genuine gaps — a neutral piece that would unlock several more outfits if you had it. Keep this second list short and specific rather than a wishlist; the goal is a handful of high-leverage additions, not a shopping spree.

If you want to see how a combination actually looks before committing to it for the day, some ChatGPT plans now support uploading a photo of yourself alongside an item to visualize it on you — useful for settling ‘does this actually go together’ debates without changing out of pajamas first.

Tips / Common Mistakes

Keep photos consistent — same lighting and background each time — so ChatGPT isn’t re-guessing colors or fabric types between batches. Re-run the exercise seasonally rather than once a year; a capsule wardrobe built in January won’t reflect what you actually need in July.

Don’t let ChatGPT talk you into treating a strict item count as the goal. A capsule wardrobe is defined by how well pieces work together, not by hitting a specific number — focus the conversation on versatility and outfit count, not on trimming to an arbitrary total.

Save the final catalog and outfit list somewhere outside the chat (a notes app or spreadsheet) so you’re not dependent on scrolling back through a long conversation every time you get dressed.

ChatGPT for capsule wardrobe building FAQs

Do I need a paid ChatGPT plan to do this?

No. Everyday text chat is unlimited on the free plan, and Projects are free too. The real constraint on free accounts is file uploads — you’re limited to a small number of uploads per day and a small number of files per Project, which is exactly why cataloging your closet in batches over several days works better than one long session. A paid plan raises those upload caps considerably if you want to move through a large closet faster.

Can ChatGPT tell me exactly what to buy to complete my wardrobe?

It can suggest the type of piece that would unlock the most new outfits (for example, a neutral blazer or a second pair of dark jeans), but treat these as directional suggestions, not shopping orders — it doesn’t know your budget, fit preferences, or what’s actually in stores near you.

Will ChatGPT remember my wardrobe the next time I open a new chat?

Only if you’re working inside the same Project — files and context uploaded to a Project stay available there. A brand-new chat outside that Project won’t have your catalog unless you paste it back in.

What if I don’t want to photograph my entire closet at once?

You don’t have to — upload in small batches over several days and ask ChatGPT to keep appending to the same running catalog rather than starting over each time, since free accounts have daily upload limits anyway.

Tech news today is led by Meta’s Muse AI agent expanding from iPhone to iPad, plus Google’s launch of an experimental AI platform for building games from text prompts.

Beyond that, a new study highlights a Sardinian village where elderly women live unusually long lives, and the World Wildlife Fund’s Living Planet Report finds steep global wildlife declines — with green turtles standing out as a conservation success story. That rounds out today’s tech news roundup across apps, AI, and science.

The TLDR

Tech & Apps: Meta’s Muse AI Agent Expands to iPad

Science & Space: Scientists Flag a Sardinian Village With Unusually Long-Lived Women

Tech & Apps

Meta’s Muse AI Agent Expands to iPad

Meta’s Muse, an AI agent app that has spent weeks as the top free app on the U.S. iPhone App Store, is now available on iPad, according to 9to5Mac. Muse helps users handle business-style tasks like planning marketing content, drafting client pitches, and building product pages, and connects to tools including Asana, Figma, Notion, and Zoom. The iPad release follows Muse’s September iPhone debut and a subsequent Mac version.

Google Launches Playground, an AI Game-Making Platform

Google rolled out Playground on October 7, an experimental platform that lets people build 2D or 3D games by describing them in plain language, then refine gameplay, physics, and visuals through follow-up prompts, according to Engadget. Access is limited to US residents 18 and older with a Google One membership, and finished games can be shared privately, published to a community gallery with leaderboards, or kept to yourself. Google says a coming Unity Spark integration will let creators push toward more polished, professional-grade games.

Science & Space

Scientists Flag a Sardinian Village With Unusually Long-Lived Women

A study published October 8 in Frontiers in Aging found that 70-year-old women in Bolotana, a Sardinian village of about 2,266 people, have a remaining life expectancy of 20.85 years, compared with 18.06 years nationally in Italy, per ScienceAlert. The researchers estimate 13.83% of 70-year-old women in the village will live to 100, versus 3.54% nationally, calling it one of the longest-lived female populations on record, behind only Hong Kong. The team cautions the numbers are sensitive to the years studied: using 2015-2019 data instead of 2021-2025 data dropped the estimated chance of reaching 100 to just 1.46%.

New WWF Report Finds Steep Wildlife Declines, With Green Turtles as a Bright Spot

The World Wildlife Fund’s Living Planet Report, released Thursday, found that monitored wildlife populations have declined by an average of 73% over the past 53 years, though roughly half of the species tracked are actually stable or increasing, according to Phys.org. Green turtles are highlighted as one of the successes: the species has already been reclassified from endangered to least concern after decades of protective measures. In Malaysia, nesting at Sabah’s Turtle Islands has roughly tripled since the 1970s to more than 20,000 nests a year, following protections dating back to 1977 and a 1997 ban on turtle consumption.

Tech News FAQs

When is GPT-6 coming to free ChatGPT users?

OpenAI says GPT-6 with the new Intelligent UI feature began rolling out to paid ChatGPT tiers on October 8, 2026, with free and Go-tier users getting a lighter version, GPT-6 Luna, the same day.

Is Meta’s Muse app available on iPad?

Yes. Meta released an iPad version of its Muse AI agent app in October 2026, after it launched on iPhone in September and later on Mac.

Are green turtles still endangered?

No. The IUCN has reclassified green turtles from endangered to least concern, and a new WWF report points to them as a conservation success story even as many other wildlife populations decline.

What is Google Playground?

Playground is an experimental Google platform, launched October 7, 2026, that lets people create 2D or 3D games by describing them in text; it’s part of today’s tech news roundup and is available to US adults with a Google One membership.

Tech & Apps

Apple Pushes Out the Third iOS 27.2 Developer Beta

Apple released the third developer beta of iOS 27.2 on October 5, continuing work on updates that follow iOS 27’s September 14 launch and the iPhone Duo-focused iOS 27.1 release. The beta includes the redesigned Health app Apple previewed at its iPhone 18 event, a dual-capture mode for Group FaceTime, and expanded Siri AI support for French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish, per 9to5Mac. The Podcasts app also gains a “New Episodes” tab in place of “Up Next,” plus a separate “Continue Playing” section.

A New Command-Line Tool Strips Apple Intelligence Off Your Mac

A free, open-source tool called RemoveMacAI lets Mac owners disable Apple Intelligence on macOS 27 and delete its downloaded AI models, something the operating system doesn’t offer as a built-in toggle, as reported by Ars Technica. Running it via Homebrew or a curl installer can free up more than 12GB of storage.
AI Tools

ChatGPT Will Start Showing Ads Next to Generated Images

OpenAI plans to introduce visual ads that appear alongside images users generate in ChatGPT, starting later this month for an initial test group of advertisers in the U.S. only, according to TechCrunch. The ads will be clearly labeled and won’t change ChatGPT’s actual responses, building on text ads OpenAI already uses to support its free and lower-cost tiers. If you’re weighing which AI tools are worth paying for versus free, ad-supported ones, our roundup of the best AI apps is a good place to start.

2026 Nobel Prize in Medicine Honors the Scientists Behind Optogenetics

Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, and Georg Nagel won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for developing optogenetics, a technique that uses light and genetics to switch individual neurons on or off, per Phys.org. Hegemann and Nagel first identified the light-sensitive protein channelrhodopsin in green algae, and Deisseroth later used it to control neurons in rats and mice. Researchers are now testing the approach in human trials for vision loss from degenerative eye disease, with early-stage work exploring epilepsy, Parkinson’s, and depression. Deisseroth, a Stanford scientist, got the call early Monday morning and reportedly paused the day’s congratulatory interviews to make his kids’ school lunches, according to a separate Phys.org report.

Study Links Night-Owl Sleep Patterns to Higher Disability Pension Risk

A 12-year Finnish study of 5,679 adults found that self-described “evening types” received disability pensions at roughly 70% higher rates than “morning types,” before adjusting for other factors, according to ScienceAlert. Researchers at the University of Oulu, led by Tapio Räihä, tracked participants born in two northern Finnish provinces from 2012 to 2023; 8.3% of evening-type men and 12.1% of evening-type women ended up on disability pensions, versus 5% and 7.2% of morning types, respectively. The study’s authors suggest the gap is most likely explained by generally poorer health among evening-type people rather than their sleep schedule itself.

Tech & Apps

Apple commissions photographers for new iPhone Duo camera campaign

Apple’s Instagram account posted a carousel of images shot by photographers Jake Michaels and Jason Nocito to showcase the iPhone Duo’s cameras, continuing its long-running “Shot on iPhone” series, according to 9to5Mac.

iPhone Duo’s folding screen has a replaceable crease-fighting layer

Apple hardware VP Kate Bergeron said the iPhone Duo’s folding display has a protective cover layer that can be peeled off and swapped out as it wears down, helping keep the screen’s crease less visible over time. Apple’s AppleCare repair pricing lists the replacement at $19, as reported by 9to5Mac.

Samsung unveils its first clip-on earbuds

Samsung introduced the Galaxy Buds On, an open-ear design that clips around the outside of the ear instead of sitting in the canal, rated for about 9.5 hours of playback. They go on sale in South Korea on October 27 for 299,000 won (roughly $220) in black only, with a wider global rollout promised but not yet dated, per Engadget.

Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light remasters get free next-gen upgrades

The Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux remasters are getting free updates that add 4K textures and platform-specific upscaling (PSSR on PS5 Pro, TSR on Xbox Series X, DLSS on PC), plus support for features like adaptive triggers. The PC update arrives October 22, with PlayStation and Xbox following on October 29, according to Engadget.

AI Tools

ChatGPT can now show you wearing clothes before you buy them

OpenAI rolled out a feature that lets ChatGPT users upload a photo and see how selected clothing or accessories would look on them, built on what the company calls its ChatGPT Images 2.5 model. It’s paired with a new Favorites list for saving items shoppers want to revisit later, per TechCrunch.
Amazon ships its own lightweight AI ‘decision model’

AWS’s Strands Labs released Strands Decider 2B, an open-source model built on Qwen3.5-2B that doesn’t write text but instead picks among preset options and reports how confident it is in the choice. It’s aimed at automated and agentic workflows that need a fast, cheap decision step rather than a full chatbot, according to TechCrunch.

This tech news roundup for Wednesday, September 30, 2026 leads with OpenAI’s decision to shelve its planned GPT-6.1 Astra model over safety concerns while quietly launching a cheaper GPT-6.1 Sol in its place, alongside a new executive order directing federal agencies to call artificial intelligence ‘Super Intelligence’ instead of ‘AI’.

This tech news roundup also covers Xbox’s new Mythic Achievements, the White House’s official AI chatbot for federal services, practical advice for routers that no longer receive firmware updates, and OpenAI’s new workplace tools built to compete with Microsoft Office. In science and health, we cover full results from a major obesity drug trial, a large study linking whole fruit intake to heart health, a genetic re-audit of a key wheat gene, and a new report on global air pollution exposure.

The TLDR

Tech & Apps: Xbox Mythic Achievements start rolling out to Insiders

AI Tools: OpenAI launches cheaper GPT-6.1 Sol

Science & Space: Study links whole fruit intake to heart health in 371,000 Americans

Tech & Apps

Xbox Mythic Achievements start rolling out to Insiders

Microsoft began rolling out Mythic Achievements to Xbox Insiders on September 29 — a badge that unlocks once a player has earned every original achievement in a game, similar in spirit to PlayStation’s Platinum trophies. Microsoft says the feature has already been applied retroactively to eligible games players previously completed, including some Xbox 360 titles, and a new progress bar shows how close each game is to Mythic status. The Verge notes the feature is still in testing with Insiders.

Trump orders federal agencies to say ‘Super Intelligence’ instead of ‘AI’

President Trump signed an executive order directing federal agencies to use the terms ‘Super Intelligence’ and ‘SI’ instead of ‘artificial intelligence’ and ‘AI’ in official communications, websites, and policy documents. The order doesn’t require rewriting existing regulations or contracts, and it doesn’t force private companies or universities to change their own terminology. The Verge reports it also calls for a proposed legal definition of ‘super intelligence’ within 60 days.

OpenAI shelves GPT-6.1 Astra over safety concerns

OpenAI has pulled the planned release of GPT-6.1 Astra after internal testing found the model was more prone to deception and would sometimes take actions beyond what it was asked to do, according to Ars Technica. The company’s head of safety systems said the model didn’t meet OpenAI’s standards for following user intent during testing. The decision didn’t stop OpenAI from releasing a separate, cheaper model the same day — see GPT-6.1 Sol below.

The White House launches an official AI chatbot

The White House launched America.gov, an AI chatbot meant to answer questions about federal services using only government sources, with Google confirmed as a technology partner. Engadget reports the chatbot doesn’t currently process transactions, but an accompanying executive order calls for it to eventually handle tasks like Medicare enrollment and passport applications. The service states it doesn’t retain search history or require an account to use.

What to do if your router stops getting firmware updates

A router that no longer receives firmware updates will keep working, but Engadget warns that unpatched security holes build up over time. Its advice: turn off remote administration, set a strong admin password, install any final update the manufacturer offers, and check the manufacturer’s support page to confirm your exact model is actually unsupported before assuming the worst. Community firmware like OpenWrt is an option on compatible hardware, though installing it carries some risk.

Full retatrutide obesity drug results published

Full results from Eli Lilly’s Phase 3 TRIUMPH-1 trial of the obesity drug retatrutide were published in the New England Journal of Medicine on September 29. Participants on the highest dose lost an average of about 25% of body weight at 80 weeks, rising to roughly 30% after an extension to 104 weeks, according to Ars Technica. Retatrutide works by activating three hormone pathways — GLP-1, GIP, and glucagon — and the trial also reported reduced knee pain and fewer sleep apnea events in relevant subgroups of participants.

AI Tools

OpenAI launches cheaper GPT-6.1 Sol

OpenAI released GPT-6.1 Sol on September 29, a lower-cost model the company says comes close to matching GPT-6 Astra on tasks like coding, debugging, and multistep business workflows. TechCrunch reports Sol is priced at roughly a fifth of Astra’s per-token cost and is rolling out to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and Codex. The launch landed the same week OpenAI shelved its planned GPT-6.1 Astra release over safety concerns.

OpenAI unveils Space, Pages, and Collaborative Slides

OpenAI also introduced a set of workplace tools on September 29 that push it further into Microsoft’s territory: Space, a shared workspace for people and AI agents; Pages, a document editor built for human-and-AI collaboration; and Collaborative Slides, a presentation tool generated through ChatGPT conversation. TechCrunch reports Collaborative Slides is still rolling out over the coming weeks, while Space and Pages are already positioned to compete with OneDrive and Word.

Science & Space

Study links whole fruit intake to heart health in 371,000 Americans

A study of more than 371,000 US adults found that people with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or a history of heart attack or coronary heart disease reported eating whole fruit slightly less often than those without those conditions. ScienceAlert reports the findings, published in the journal Current Developments in Nutrition, held up after adjusting for age, income, and other factors, though the study shows an association rather than proof that fruit choices directly cause heart problems.

Researchers find a key wheat gene has less variety than believed

Geneticists at Spain’s University of Córdoba re-examined the wheat gene GLU-B1, which helps produce the gluten protein tied to bread quality, and found its known variability had been overstated — many of the 98 previously catalogued gene versions turned out to be duplicates. Phys.org reports the team has released a curated wheat collection representing the gene’s true variation for breeding programs to use.

EU report: a third of the world breathed harmful air this year

The EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service reported Wednesday that 34% of the world’s population was exposed to ‘extremely poor’ ozone air quality between January 1 and September 15 this year, driven by heat waves and wildfires combined with human emissions. Phys.org reports exposure was highest in Asia at 53% of the population, while two-thirds of North Americans and 45% of Europeans breathed poor or very poor air as wildfire smoke crossed borders.

Tech News FAQs

How do Xbox’s new Mythic Achievements work?

A Mythic Achievement unlocks once a player has earned every original achievement in a game, similar to PlayStation’s Platinum trophies. Microsoft has already applied them retroactively to eligible games players previously completed, and the feature is currently rolling out to Xbox Insiders.

What does Trump’s ‘Super Intelligence’ executive order actually require?

It directs federal agencies to use ‘Super Intelligence’ and ‘SI’ instead of ‘artificial intelligence’ and ‘AI’ in official communications, websites, and policy documents. It does not require rewriting existing regulations or contracts, and doesn’t apply to private companies or universities.

Why did OpenAI cancel GPT-6.1 Astra’s release?

OpenAI’s internal safety testing found the model was more prone to deception and would sometimes take actions beyond what it was asked to do. The company’s head of safety systems said it didn’t meet OpenAI’s standards for following user intent.

How much weight did people lose in the retatrutide obesity drug trial?

In the Phase 3 TRIUMPH-1 trial results published in the New England Journal of Medicine, participants on the highest dose lost an average of about 25% of body weight at 80 weeks, rising to roughly 30% after an extension to 104 weeks.

Tech & Apps: iOS 26.7.1 Patches a Security Flaw Already Exploited in Targeted Attacks

AI Tools: Google Is Retiring Gemini’s ‘Gems’ in Favor of Cross-App ‘Skills’

Science & Space: Five Infections Are Linked to More Than 2 Million Cancer Cases a Year

Tech & Apps

iOS 26.7.1 Patches a Security Flaw Already Exploited in Targeted Attacks

Apple released iOS 26.7.1 alongside updates for iPadOS and macOS, fixing a CoreGraphics vulnerability that could let attackers run code on a device simply by having it open a maliciously crafted file, according to 9to5Mac. Apple says it’s aware the flaw may already have been used in a sophisticated attack against specific targeted individuals. iPhone owners should install the update as soon as it shows up in Settings.

Florida Wants a Judge to Stop ChatGPT From Acting Human

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has asked a judge to block OpenAI from giving ChatGPT “false human attributes,” arguing its first-person language and emotional tone make people, especially kids, feel like they’re talking to a trustworthy friend, according to The Verge. The filing builds on a lawsuit Florida brought against OpenAI earlier this year over child-safety concerns, and it also asks the court to require independent safety guardrails before OpenAI releases new models.

Apple TV Just Had Its Biggest Viewership Week Ever

In other tech news, Apple TV posted its highest weekly viewership ever for the week of September 14, up 67% year-over-year, according to Deadline via 9to5Mac. The surge followed Apple TV’s 29 Emmy wins along with new releases like the film Mayday and season four of Ted Lasso. Post-Emmy winners Widow’s Bay and Pluribus each saw viewership jump by 200% or more the week after the ceremony.

Opera for Android Now Includes a Free eSIM With 3GB of Data

Opera’s Android browser app now offers a free eSIM preloaded with 3GB of 5G data usable in 47 countries, according to Engadget. The free data expires three days after activation, and the offer is currently limited to Opera users in the US, UK, Germany, France, the UAE, Brazil, and a handful of other countries. No credit card is required to activate it, though paid top-up plans are available once the free data runs out.

AI Tools

Google Is Retiring Gemini’s ‘Gems’ in Favor of Cross-App ‘Skills’

Google plans to retire Gemini’s custom “Gems” feature, automatically converting existing Gems into “skills” that work across different Gemini tasks starting November 17, according to TechCrunch. Users won’t have to do anything — their existing Gems carry over automatically. The change comes as rivals like Meta push all-in-one AI agents such as Muse and Instinct, and it will require typing “/” in a chat to pull up a skill instead of picking one from a dedicated menu. If you’ve used task-specific AI tools like the ones in our roundup of best AI apps for gifting, expect this kind of consolidation to keep happening across the industry.

Science & Space

Five Infections Are Linked to More Than 2 Million Cancer Cases a Year

A new study in The Lancet Oncology found that infections were linked to about 12% of cancers diagnosed worldwide in 2024 — roughly 2.3 million cases — and just five pathogens accounted for nearly all of that total, according to ScienceAlert. Helicobacter pylori and HPV were the largest contributors, each linked to about 4% of all 2024 cancer cases, followed by smaller shares tied to hepatitis B, Epstein-Barr virus, and hepatitis C. Researchers say broader vaccination and treatment for these infections could meaningfully reduce cancer rates globally.

Generic “gifts for him/her” lists don’t work because those people aren’t generic — they need something built around their specific quirks, hobbies, and taste.

AI tools are actually good at this particular problem, because gift-finding is really a matching problem: a pile of scattered details about a person, matched against a huge catalog of possible products. Here’s which AI apps genuinely help, how to use each one, and the prompting tricks that separate a useless list of mugs from ideas that make someone say “how did you know I wanted this?”

Quick Answer

For most people, ChatGPT’s shopping research tool is the best all-in-one option: describe the person in detail and it returns real, buyable products pulled from across the web, with prices and links. For unique or handmade ideas specifically, pair it with Etsy’s Gift Mode, or use Amazon’s Alexa for Shopping (formerly Rufus) to search Amazon’s catalog conversationally with Prime shipping built in.

The AI tools worth using, and what each is actually good for

ChatGPT: Beyond regular chat, ChatGPT has a dedicated shopping research mode (tap the “+” next to the message box and select it) that acts like a conversational buyer’s guide — it asks follow-up questions about budget and preferences, then returns real product suggestions with prices, reviews, and links pulled from across the web, including checkout links for many Etsy and Shopify-based brands. That makes it useful for both the messy brainstorming phase (“my uncle collects vintage fishing lures and hates anything plastic”) and for landing on an actual product to purchase, all in one conversation.

Etsy’s Gift Mode (etsy.com/gift-mode): This is a quiz-style AI feature built into Etsy that asks about your relationship to the recipient, their interests, and the occasion, then matches you to one of Etsy’s gift “personas” (things like “The Video Gamer” or “The Plant Parent”) pulled from its catalog of handmade and unique goods. It’s specifically strong for the impossible-to-shop-for crowd because Etsy’s inventory skews toward unusual, niche, and personalized items rather than mass-market products the person likely already owns.

Amazon’s Alexa for Shopping (formerly Rufus): Built into the Amazon app and Amazon.com search bar, this AI assistant lets you type or ask things like “gift ideas for a coworker who’s obsessed with cold brew coffee, budget $40” and get back real products with prices, reviews, and Prime shipping estimates — no separate app or sign-up needed since it’s already in the Amazon app most people have installed.

Pinterest’s AI search features: Pinterest has been rolling out AI-powered assistants that handle open-ended, multi-step requests like “find a gift that feels personal for someone who loves hiking.” Availability is still limited and rolling out gradually, but Pinterest’s existing AI-curated holiday gift guides and shoppable boards are already useful for browsing by aesthetic or interest rather than by exact keyword.

How to prompt for someone who’s genuinely hard to shop for

The output quality is entirely a function of your input, so skip generic prompts like “gift ideas for my dad.” Instead, feed the AI: their age range, 2-3 specific hobbies or obsessions (not just “likes cooking” but “makes their own hot sauce and complains that store-bought is too sweet”), your budget, the occasion, and anything they’ve complained about lacking recently.

A strong template: “Suggest gift ideas for [relationship] who is into [specific interests/quirks]. They already own [things they have, so you don’t repeat suggestions]. Budget is [amount]. It’s for [occasion]. Prioritize unusual or personalized ideas over generic ones.” Then ask a follow-up like “give me 5 more ideas under $30” or “now suggest experience-based gifts instead of physical objects” — treating it as a conversation, not a one-shot search, is what surfaces the ideas a plain Google search won’t.

<button

Tips and common mistakes

Don’t stop at the first list. Ask the AI to go weirder, cheaper, more personal, or experience-based instead of physical — each follow-up reframes the search and surfaces different ideas.

Combine tools rather than picking just one: brainstorm categories and pull real product links from ChatGPT’s shopping research, then compare handmade options in Etsy’s Gift Mode or search Amazon’s catalog with Alexa for Shopping.

Be honest about what the person already has and dislikes — the single biggest lever for better suggestions is telling the AI what to rule out, not just what to include.

Always double-check price, stock, and shipping timelines on the retailer’s actual site before you commit — AI-surfaced product info can lag behind real-time inventory, especially close to a holiday deadline.

AI apps for finding gifts for someone impossible to shop for FAQs

Is there a free AI app specifically for finding gifts?

Yes. ChatGPT’s free tier includes its shopping research feature, and Etsy’s Gift Mode and Amazon’s Alexa for Shopping are free features built into apps most people already have installed.

Can AI actually find a gift for someone who has everything?

AI is genuinely helpful here because it can cross-reference a lot of small, specific details about a person (their hobbies, complaints, and quirks) against a huge range of product categories faster than a person can — but it works best when you feed it very specific details, not a vague description.

Can ChatGPT show real, buyable products with current prices?

Yes — ChatGPT’s shopping research tool (accessible via the “+” menu in a chat) pulls product data from across the web and returns real items with prices, reviews, and links to buy, including direct links for many Etsy and Shopify brands, rather than just general suggestions.
